Different types of Pencil shading techniques

                  (Pencils-used-for-shading)
Hey there, you started your Art journey, make beautiful drawing but you ever felt that they are just a flat lines on paper? Right? In this drawing tutorial we are going to discuss about some simple and effective techniques which can make your drawing looks like real one, we can say it 3D drawing.
So let's discuss about lightning and shading techniques for drawing.
Basically 'Shading' is a process of adding values to drawing to create an illusion of form, shapes and most importantly light in a drawing. By giving proper light shade to drawing makes it more realistic and appear as three dimensional image.
There are various types of shading techniques. We are going to see basic definitions of them.
Different shading methods used for drawing

1- Hatching
Hatching means simply cross lines drawn in one or same direction. When you draw many lines in a same direction which are very close to each other it creates a shadow effect to it. And when you draw by leaving space in between those lines it will make it lighter tone. Just like below image

.

2- Cross Hatching
This is some what similar to a Hatching but it differentiate them by applying cross linings. Which means we first applied lines in same direction in hatching process and then another lines overlaps on that lines. We can say lines cross over each other. Again same applies in this process...more lines means more darker value and less one for lighter value. As shown below.

3- Blending
One of the best and my personal favourite method for shading is 'Blending'. There are some reasons behind this like it is one of the easiest and also way to hard method for shading. In blending we can add smooth values to our drawing. As I earlier said it is hard one just because we have to take care of pressure applied while blending. In my another lesson I already told the materials which can be used to blend in proper way such as Blending stumps, cotton buds and you can blend by using tissue paper too. I highly recommend to try this method.

4- Stippling
Stippling means applying countless amount of small dots. As you put more dots it will result in darker tone and vice versa, less for less amount.
There are some other methods which are not mostly used but I will put them her to get simple idea about them too.

5- Rendering
This method mostly used along with blending one. In this we have to make lighter shades by erasing them with the help of eraser.
6-  Drawing random lines
Random lines are applied as we used in hatching in any pattern to create effect. Same for here to density or amount of lines determines darker and lighter tones.

Important note to remember - while studying shading techniques you have to keep one thing in mind that every shading type is not for you so focus on one shading technique and master it. Practice a lot. Once you did that you can move to next one. Happy art journey!!
